Three direct hits were then scored on the gun, the first disabling the layer, whose place was taken by Sergeant Mordin. The second shot wounded Mordin in the eye but he continued operating the gun until the third shell killed Lance Sergeant Godfrey Woolven and badly injured the remaining crew. At this moment the reserve ammunition limber arrived on the scene and was promptly destroyed by another direct hit. With the gun disabled, Mordin ordered a withdrawal.
